The benefits of sulfur soap and manufacturing process for handmade soaper.
Effectiveness :
Sulfur soap can be used for scabies, acne, psoriasis, dandruff, rosacea etc. skin problems as a adjuvant therapy and reduce bacterial infection. Part of effectiveness comes from the interaction of skin and sulfur which produces hydrogen sulfide for sterilization/insecticide.
Of course, sulfur soap can have side effects. The most common side effects include dry skin, peel(flake), allergies(itching) after a few uses. Sulfur soap is seldom effectiveness for healthy skin, so just use it properly.
Process:
In the traditional industrial process, Soap Base is mixed with sulfur powder, then stirred and pressed. Sulfur presents in the form of the element.
For handmade soaper, since the sulfur and sodium hydroxide (or potassium hydroxide) will initiate a chemical reaction, so that adding sulfur to soap in different ways, lead to different results. Following are five examples:
No.1 sulfur is added to lye and heated.
No.2 sulfur is dissolved in oil (Depends on the type of oil, the solubility may rise up to 10%).
No.3 sulfur is added at trace stage.
No.4 sulfur is mixed with melted transparent soap
No.5 sulfur is mixed with cured handmade soap (rebatching).
Explanation:
No.1 may produce sulfur dioxide gas etc. It is more dangerous and not recommended.
No.2 and No.3, the sulfur is converted to polysulfide which is more irritating than sulfur. Polysulfide may also produce hydrogen sulfide gas (very toxic), it should not add too much.
No.4 and No.5, sulfur presents in the form of the element as safe as industrial sulfur soap and may be added up to 10%.
Process Tip:
1. Try to avoid high temperature while processing or lower operating temperature within the operable range.
2. For No.2 and No.3, sulfur will react with sodium hydroxide, it is not preferred to superfast.
